In The Dogs of Riga, the author does not seem to have decided what sort of character Wallander is going to be.

The story starts in the familiar setting of Ystad, Wallander's home town, where two murdered men are found in a rubber lifeboat washed up on a nearby beach, and has much of the atmosphere that we now know from the later by: 4.

Book Review Dogs of Riga, the second in the Kurt Wallander series places Wallander outside of his comfort zone: in Riga, capital of Latvia and without the presence of his familiar Swedish colleagues to whom we were introduced in the first of the series.

Riga, Latvia/5. About The Dogs of Riga. From the dean of Scandinavian noir, the second riveting installment in the internationally bestselling and universally acclaimed Kurt Wallander series, the basis for the PBS series staring Kenneth Branagh. On the Swedish coastline, two bodies, victims of grisly torture and cold execution, are discovered in a life raft.

Henning Mankell’s The Dogs of Riga is not a book about dogs but rather one that refers to another meaning of the word. That is, “ to follow someone or their movements closely and persistently.”. This book, "The Dogs of Riga" deals with the problem of Russia trying to hold on to Latvia after the dissolution of the Soviet Union.

The next book, "The White Lioness," is one of Mankell's The Dogs of Riga book. This third book will probably partially take place in South Africa and deal with apartheid. In Riga, Wallander must deal with widespread governmental corruption, which opens his eyes to the chilling reality of life in the totalitarian Eastern Bloc: grim, harrowing and volatile.

Wallander's introspection and self-doubt make him compellingly real, and his efforts to find out what happened to those men on the life raft makes for riveting 4/5(27). The fall of communism and the consequent increase in Swedish immigration and asylum seekers are themes in the Wallander books and Latvian links are the main subject in this book.

The new breed of crime rising in the early ‘90s in Sweden however continues to shock Wallander and makes him uncertain whether he should even working in the police.

The Dogs of Riga (Swedish: Hundarna i Riga) is a Swedish detective mystery by Henning Mankell, set in Riga, the capital of Latvia. It is the second book of the Kurt Wallander series, and was translated into English by Laurie Thompson.

Adaptation. The novel was adapted into a theatrical film by Swedish public broadcaster Sveriges Television in Author: Henning Mankell. Lied to, shot at, chased by “the dogs of Riga” (read: government-protected criminals), Wallander remains as indomitable as ever en route to one more dark victory.

When Mankell keeps his cases under pages, his pacing benefits exponentially, producing this time a near-flawless performance in a distinguished series (Firewall,etc.). I greatly enjoyed The Dogs of Riga.

Having given Dick Hill a negative review for his reading of the first book in the Wallander series, I was pleased that he had settled into a more appropriate style than in Faceless Killers. The story is intriguing with a fast pace and an unusually well handled sense of place.

THE DOGS OF RIGA is the second (in terms of publishing order) in Henning Mankell’s Kurt Wallander series. While this novel does not shine the way FACELESS KILLERS does, Mankell’s gritty, ultra-realist noir writing style keeps a somewhat tired plotline fresh and interesting, and makes this a piece not to be missed in the ongoing development of Wallander’s character.
